Europe has world‑class science, yet industrial scale‑up is too often hindered by fragmented and overlapping rules. This is why the EU must deliver an EU Biotech Act II: a coherent, market‑oriented framework that enables biomanufacturing to progress from innovation to industrial scale across sectors.
For EFFCA, this is not abstract. Food cultures are biomanufacturing in action: live microorganisms used every day to ensure safe, consistent fermentation while supporting food quality, safety, and shelf life.
Yet their regulatory status as food ingredients still lacks clarity and consistency at the EU level. Addressing this is essential to ensure fair market access and to unlock further innovation.
