In 2010 EFFCA hosted, together with two other stakeholders, a workshop on probiotics. The workshop was organised as a response to the apparent lack of transparency on probiotics by the industry. The workshop and efforts to see EU authorities seek to clarify the benefits of probiotics.

The event took place during the time when the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) was evaluating health claims of probiotics. Following the workshop (2011) EFFCA learned that no claims related to the benefits of probiotics had received a positive opinion by EFSA, despite the extensive experimental and clinical research in this area.
